Design for the future

So Thomas Friedman’s long New York Times Magazine essay today hits on his newest metaphor for changing the world: “Green is the new red, white and blue.”
Norman Foster quoted Thomas Friedman‘s speaking. Norman Foster who was the environmental consider architect, his buliding always consider the complycated elements.
The Reichstag opened in 1894 but was severely damaged by a fire in 1933. It was partially restored in the 60s, but the final work by British architects Fosters & Partners was done in 1999, causing it to flourish as the modern Bundestag. Featuring a magnificent-glazed cupola on its terrace roof, the building is now a radical and perfect example of energy efficiency and power storage.

The gorgeous glass cupola brings plenty of natural light and ventilation down to the parliament floors and into its own entrance, reflected by its mirrored-core. More natural light do not use electricty.

No paper

When I though this conception, digital products come into my eyes. We are used to watching the information from the internet, samrt phone, the lap top, and the digital readers. These must be the best practice of NO PAPER practice. To make a ebook, souds like it is easy and many people have done that before. Digtal could be everything.
This picture shows the United Visual Artists (UVA) has been commissioned by Virgin Media to create an immersive light installation on London’s South Bank to mark the tenth anniversary of broadband in the UK. ‘Speed of Light’ is a series of installations that explore the themes of communication and modernity. Stripped back to its materials, fibre optic is a thin strand of glass, with nothing more than a flickering beam of light. UVA have used this beam as the starting point for their work. The installations dramatize the experience of using fibre-optic communication, re-imagining it as an immersive environment.
They combine the soud input and the light. Making them together, light and sound. But it couldn't help my concept no paper. It just show the light. How can I make it?

No ink practice

3R-reduce,reuse and recycle. This basic theory of green design. Reduce, the best reduce is no use.So I think about no ink. If we don't use ink, that must be green more. But I thnk that is impossible. How could we do not use ink and we can see the information. I thought about the tiny hole by needle. Firstly people see the paper or the light decorated by the little needle hole, we always think that is just decoration. But sometime it it not. It is also green way to communication.

Other organization effort

Green Map System(GMS), a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable community
development, based in New York City, advocates for inclusive participation in sustainable
community development around the world, using mapmaking as our medium. It is aim to expand
the demand for healthier, greener choices. GMS offer a good reference for our life, especially
for designer. When we choose the material (paper, plastic, ink,) ,GMS help us to choose the green
one. As a designer said "Sustainability isn't hard; it's just not simple".

Fake green?

There are many "eco" or "green" objectives around us. Is them true green?  Example: A booklet
printed on brilliant white glossy stock that uses toxic materials to produce the paper but uses vegetable
inks to appear "eco". This is irony. But that is really exist in our life. Sometimes the "eco" just utilize
the environmental sense of public. So, how we make the objects authentic green is very necessary. Put
the practic.

Chuckanut Ridge House. It is with a minimal environmental impact .But the bamboo floor. It was from China.

Why be socially and environmentally responsible?

People become more environmentally and conscious for many reasons, and concern for the
environment is not at the top of everyone's list. Jaimie Cloud, founder of the cloud Institute for v
Sustainability Education, is an expert on what motivates people to become more socially and
environmentally responsible. She maintains that most people want to do the right thing and reframes
common questions. And then, to the designer who should do more to the society. She believed that we
live in a world linked together by mutually beneficial systems and that every action should solve more
than one problem.

The waste of digital

  1. When I finsihed my presentation, my tutor suggested that I should see this documentary"Mnufactured landscape".It is direted by Canadian fine art photographer Edward Burtynsky shoots the recycling dumps, superfactories, vast quarries and shipyards, capturing visual beauty in the ecological devastation. And making us thinking about  the problem: After all we demand the lowest prices in everything we buy and that probably means it was made in China. This movie gave me another pointview thinking about the digital products. The small product looks like nothing harmful to the environment, when we saw the report about the wast of electrical , I was been shocked.

Who read ebooks?

We can see that many people read ebooks, there is a inforgraphic about the topic "who reads  ebook".Random House’s Research and Analytics team pulled together details on the US ebook consumer from research reports from Pew, Bowker, and Forrester.
I was superised by the data when I saw this inforgrahic. I never thought about that people read ebook will disscuss books about their family and friends. Through the data we know that people who read eboob more about the suspense, mystery and romantic. This context are more about dailylife. People do not like talk about the profesional problem. It is easy to understanding.

Digital to the end

At this stage I want to more focus on the print production because this is the intensive area of graphic
designers. In addition, digital product is more significantly effect our life, it will change the situation of
the graphic design area. More and more digital application that we could download. Like calender, the
important goods we need before, but now we all have the moble phone that built into calender. And
many people use the digital reader like Kindle, ipad. So there is a discuss whether the printing books
will be disappear, maybe will or maybe not. This question just about the time and technology. But I
think that digital book is more light and efficiency. It is save the energy to making paper and printing,
in addition, the transportation. The digital book is not perfect enough, but along with the developing of
the technology, it will much more convenient and more useful.
Kindle reader, the digital reader is not fresh enough, but the factory try their best to make it more closed to the real book and add more specific features to it. Currently, it was not good engouh, at the future, it will be good.
